![]() Two blocks from MASS MoCA is a rustic boutique lodging, the Porches Inn, where artists stay during the FreshGrass music festival. Many new hotels have opened or are being built in the Berkshires, but there's a shortage of quality lodgings in the North Adams area. The lodge, now a restaurant and event space, was featured in the 1978 movie Renaldo and Clara written by Dylan and Sam Shepard. The Dream Away Lodge is a centuries-old farmhouse with public gardens that was visited in 1975 by Guthrie, Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, Roger McGuinn, Allen Ginsberg and many other musicians during Dylan's historic Rolling Thunder Revue tour. The Guthrie Center can be found at the Old Trinity Church where musician Arlo Guthrie once lived and made famous in the movie Alice's Restaurant. Other notable attractions are farther south in the Berkshires, including the Hancock Shaker Village in Pittsfield, the Guthrie Center in Great Barrington and the Dream Away Lodge in Becket. Visitors at the Clark in Williamstown, Massachusetts, look at the works in the Impressionist. The works of renowned artists worldwide can be viewed, including those of Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Edgar Degas, Édouard Manet, Claude Monet, Berthe Morisot and Camille Pissarro. ![]() The Clark displays European and American paintings, sculpture, drawings and photographs from the Renaissance to the early 20th Century. The Clark art museum in Williamstown, also the home of Williams College, is a short 15-minute drive from MASS MoCA. Mount Greylock State Reservation has more than 12,500 acres of land, including nearly 12 miles of the Appalachian Trail, and Greylock's summit is a wondrous spot to paraglide or watch paragliders run off the edge of the mountain for a sail in the bright, blue sky. It's slim pickings as far as attractions and nightlife in North Adams, so it’s best to enjoy the great outdoors and visit other notable attractions in the Berkshires. A short walk from MASS MoCA is an excellent casual restaurant, PUBLIC, which serves innovative flatbreads, small and big plates, and has a good craft-beer selection. The museum makes its own ice cream and has its own craft brewery, Bright Ideas Brewing. MASS MoCA offers many eating and drinking options with a full-service restaurant, a cafe and a coffee shop. It hosts dance, film, theater and musical performances, including the three-day FreshGrass music festival each September and Solid Sound, a three-day music and arts festival presented by the rock band Wilco. You won't find any whales swimming about in MASS MoCA, but you will notice that the museum goes way beyond simply displaying artwork. Melville, who lived in Pittsfield, about 20 miles south of Greylock, loved the mountain's "most excellent majesty" and thought its snow-covered peak in winter looked like a huge white whale. The mountain was the inspiration for Herman Melville's classic novel Moby Dick and offers spectacular views - up to 90 miles away on a clear day.
